How to Clean Leather Sandals
Leather sandals are fun and fashionable footwear during the summer months or all year, if you live in a climate that allows you to wear them year-round. Unfortunately, however, leather sandals can become stained or develop an unpleasant odor. Luckily, these sandals can be cleaned easily. Follow these tips to restore your leather sandals to their original color and condition.
Things You Need:
- Moisturizing soap
- Leather conditioner
- Leather preservative
- Clean cloths and towels
- Saddle soap
- Vinegar
Treated Leather Sandals:
1) Dampen a cloth. Place a nickel-sized amount of moisturizing body soap or hand soap on the cloth.
2) Rub the cloth together until it forms a slight lather. Wipe the lather lightly on your sandals.
3) Dampen another clean cloth and wipe away the soap gently. Use a towel to dry the sandal.
4) Place the sandals outside and let them dry in the sun. Use a leather conditioner to get the sandals back to their original polish. Follow instructions on the label carefully to make sure you purchased a leather cleaner that is appropriate for your shoes.
Untreated Leather Sandals
1)Dampen a cloth and place a dime-sized amount of saddle soap on it. Work it into a lather by rubbing the cloth together.
2)Gently rub the lather onto the sandals. Wipe away the soap with a clean damp cloth and dry with a towel.
Place the sandals in the sun to dry. Rub leather preservative on the leather in order to bring it to its original shine. Follow directions on the particular product you choose for your sandals.
Wipe away odor. Mix one teaspoon of vinegar with one cup of warm water. Dampen a cloth with the mixture and wipe the sandals with it. Vinegar will eat the bacteria and help to kill the odor in your sandals. Let them dry out in the sun.
Warnings:
Before cleaning your sandals, make sure you test on a small portion of the shoe. Leather can easily be discolored, depending on the type and make, so test the mixtures on a tiny area of the sandal before using on the entire sandal.
Using a shoe brush
Ensure your shoes are dry and using a soft shoe cleaning brush, gently brush away the dirt.
Removing stains
Remove stains by using a suitable leather shoe cleaner made specifically for smooth leathers.
Removing water stains
Lightly wet the entire outside of the shoe, use a sponge or dry cloth to blot any excess water, then let the shoes dry overnight. To keep the shape of the shoe, insert a shoe tree whilst it dries, once completely dry, brush lightly with your suede brush.
Protect your leather shoes
There are some great products out there which help keep your shoes in good shape, however, an alternative shoes is to use Petroleum Jelly.
Apply a small amount of jelly to a clean soft lint-free cloth. Massage the jelly in a circular motion, then let them rest a while. Wipe off the jelly using a clean part of the cloth.
Warning:
Always read and follow the manufacturer's directions on the label for leather cleaning/protector products. Make sure you have adequate ventilation before spraying.
SHOE CARE
Buckles on shoes or belts
Use an old toothbrush and toothpaste. Then wipe off with a damp rag or rinse under cold water.
Cowhide, calfskin, kidskin
Keep well-polished. Polishing keeps shoes looking good, as well as keeping leather soft. As a preventative measure, it's advisable to apply several coats of transparent polish before shoes are worn for the first time
Fabric shoes
Wash some fabric shoes by hand and let air dry at least once a month to keep them looking new. Keep the shape by stuffing with newspaper and replace as it gets soaked through. Newspaper helps speed up the drying process.
Nubuck
Wipe with cloth or use soft brush to remove surface dirt.
Patent leather
Remove surface soil with damp cloth. Occasionally apply soft cream polish or thin film of Vaseline petroleum jelly. To keep leather flexible, apply conditioner or preservative. For good results, clean patent leather with Windex.
Reptile (alligator, lizard, crocodile, snake)
Snakeskin should only be polished with a soft cloth that is wiped with the grain. Spraying lightly with hairspray will help to keep the grain down.
Satin
Regular trips to the dry cleaners will keep them looking new.
Suede shoes
Should be brushed clean with a suede brush or light sand paper. This will raise the nap of the leather as well as loosen dirt. Never use water on suede because the dissolved minerals usually cause spotting. Stains such as paint or glue can be removed with fine sandpaper. A gum eraser or soft side of an emery board helps remove spots.
FUN TIP -
If your leather laces always come undone, keep them tied by sprinkling a few drops of water on the knot.
CARING FOR KEEN PRODUCTS

Sandal Washing Instructions
All KEEN water sandals (both leather and polyester webbing upper) are machine washable on the gentle cycle, in cold water with a mild detergent. Allow to air dry. We've also taken great care to develop leather uppers that will not crack, shrink or stretch when washed!
Leather
Caring for Leather
We've carefully selected leather uppers designed to last. Then again, if you're wearing your KEENS daily, they won't always be scuff and dirt-free. We recommend using a nubuck leather cleaner and conditioner. These products can be found at most better footwear dealers and outdoor gear shops.

How to Remove Foot Marks from Sandals
They look like permanent imprints, but what the marks are really ground in dirt and stains. These can be difficult to remove because the dirt has been pushed into the fibers of the soles. This clever solution will remove the toughest dirt and grime from the fabric portions your footwear. For best results, use a deep cleansing foam product to get to the bottom of ground-in stains.
You Will Need:
Carpet or upholstery cleaner
Toothbrush
Damp sponge
White paper towels
Steps to Remove the Stain:
1) Spray the stained fabric portions of your sandals with carpet or upholstery cleaner. Do not get the cleaner on leather or other materials unless the label states it is safe to do so.
2) Let the cleaner sit for the recommended period of time according to label directions.
3) Begin to scrub with the toothbrush to work out stains.
4) Blot the work surface periodically with a white paper towel. If the paper towel turns dark, you still have some scrubbing to do. As the mess is lifted away and the paper towel lightens, you know your efforts are being met with some success.
5) Once the paper towels are coming away fairly clean, rinse the carpet cleaner away by blotting the area with a sponge dampened with water, rinsing the sponge frequently.
6) Allow the sandals to air dry. You probably won’t be able to clearly tell how clean they are until they dry.
Repeat if necessary.
